The Two Weeks Lavender Actually Happens

Everyone thinks Provence lavender means July. In reality, Valensole can begin blooming in mid-June — and in an early year, harvesting may start before July has properly begun.

Lavender is less a season than a moving window. On the Valensole plateau, flowering usually falls between mid-June and mid-July, but weather can shift both the bloom and the harvest noticeably from one year to the next. Higher areas around Sault generally come later, which gives us somewhere to look when the plateau has already started to turn.

This is why “summer” is not enough when someone asks us to plan Provence around the lavender. We choose the week first — and build the rest of Provence around it.

Why the dates move

Flowering responds to the weather, which is why no two lavender seasons are identical. The Valensole plateau usually blooms from mid-June to mid-July, but warm conditions can bring both flowering and harvesting forward considerably. In 2026, for example, bloom was already underway by 10 June and harvesting began on 29 June.

This is where altitude helps. Around Sault, lavender generally comes into flower later and can continue into August. We treat it as a second window rather than assuming the whole of Provence will peak at the same time.

Where to actually be

For the photographs everyone comes for, early morning and evening are the moments that matter. Midday on the plateau is hot, bright and busy; softer light transforms the same landscape at the edges of the day.

Two well-timed visits to the plateau are usually enough. Build the rest of the week around markets, vineyards, villages and long lunches — the parts of Provence that remain worthwhile whether the lavender is early, late or exactly on cue.

Three places to be that fortnight
The Valensole plateau

01 · The Valensole plateau

The landscape everyone recognises. Aim for early morning or the final hours of daylight, both for softer light and a quieter experience. Flowering normally runs from mid-June to mid-July, but never assume a July date guarantees intact fields.

A garden in the Luberon

02 · The Luberon villages

Where you sleep and eat. Shade for the afternoon, a market before eight, and somewhere to be when the light is wrong.

A road through the high fields

03 · The high fields at Sault

Higher and generally later than Valensole. Lavender begins flowering here in early July and can continue into August, making the Sault area particularly useful when the lower plateau has already moved into harvest.

If you go next year
Book by

Ideally by winter for a late-June or July trip. The best small properties have limited inventory, and the lavender window coincides with one of Provence’s most popular periods.

How long

Six or seven nights works beautifully: one or two early visits to the lavender fields, with the rest of the stay reserved for the Luberon, markets, wine and villages.

Getting there

Marseille Provence Airport or Avignon TGV, followed by a private transfer or rental car. A car is useful once you are in Provence; for sunrise photography days, we prefer arranging a driver who already knows the plateau.

The hedge

We follow local flowering and harvest updates as the trip approaches. If Valensole runs early, we adjust the field days toward the higher country around Sault rather than forcing an itinerary around fields that have already been cut.

Rates

Upon request. Late June and July are high-demand weeks in Provence, so early planning matters more here than finding a last-minute rate.
