Six Days in Kenya, Without Turning Safari into a Checklist
Lake Nakuru for rhino and the Great Rift Valley. The Maasai Mara for big cats, open plains and, in season, the migration. Five nights, two very different landscapes — and no attempt to see all of East Africa before breakfast.

The mistake with a first safari is usually not staying too little.
It is trying to see too much.
Three reserves become four, every second morning begins with luggage, and by the end the family remembers the small aircraft and check-outs almost as clearly as the lions.
For a short first safari, we prefer to edit hard.
Two nights at Lake Nakuru give you a very different Kenya: rhino, yellow acacia woodland, the Rift Valley and a lake full of birdlife. Then we move once — into the Maasai Mara — and stay for three nights.
The result is only six days.
It does not feel like a six-day race.

01 · Lake Nakuru
Rhino country
Start with the animal people forget to ask for
Drive from Nairobi into the Great Rift Valley and spend two nights inside Lake Nakuru National Park.
The reason to come is not the famous old photographs of a lake completely covered in flamingos — water levels have changed and flamingo numbers fluctuate considerably. We come for something more reliable: Lake Nakuru is one of Kenya’s most important rhino sanctuaries, with both black and white rhino, alongside Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo, lion, leopard and remarkably rich birdlife.
Stay at The Cliff, ten tented suites sitting high above the lake. One morning, we like to leave the vehicle altogether: a sunrise boat safari moves through the lake landscape with pelicans, flamingos and other waterbirds at eye level, with breakfast arranged on the water when conditions allow.

02 · The Maasai Mara
Days on the plains
Then give the plains time
From Nakuru, the important thing is not to lose half a day retracing the road. For the right itinerary, we arrange the bush-air transfer into the Mara rather than treating the journey as another sightseeing drive. The exact aircraft and routing are confirmed for each trip.
We particularly like Angama Mara, set high on the Oloololo Escarpment and directly bordering the Mara Triangle. A private road brings guests down into the Triangle in under twenty minutes, while every tent looks over the plains below.
Three nights give you the freedom to let the wildlife dictate the day: breakfast in the bush, a long drive if something extraordinary is happening, time at the photographic studio or a picnic on the kopje made famous by Out of Africa.
In Migration season, we plan for the Migration — never for a guaranteed river crossing. Wildebeest follow rain and grass, not hotel reservations, and that unpredictability is part of safari.

03 · Nairobi
The last morning
Use the last day properly
Fly from the Mara back to Nairobi. If the flight timing works with the fixed visiting hour, we can pre-arrange the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nairobi Nursery; otherwise, we would rather move it to the beginning of the journey than force the day around it.
The Giraffe Centre, lunch in Karen or simply a comfortable day room before an evening international departure can then fill the remaining hours. The final day should feel useful, not rushed.
Day six
Day sixWhat makes six days work
On a five-night safari, you feel every inefficient hour. We choose road or air according to what preserves the game-viewing time — not according to what makes the itinerary look more elaborate.
Where you sleep changes how you safari. At Angama, direct access into the Mara Triangle means less time getting to the wildlife and more freedom to stay out when something is happening.
A safari should not operate like a sightseeing schedule. If a leopard stays in a tree through lunch, we want your guide to stay too. If the morning has already been extraordinary, there is nothing wrong with spending the afternoon by the pool.
Bush flights, park fees, Sheldrick’s fixed visiting hour, luggage limits and transfer times all sit behind a short safari. When they are arranged properly, you barely notices them. That is the point.
Who it suits
First-time safari travellers who want Kenya without committing two weeks to it; couples who still care deeply about where they sleep; and families with children old enough to enjoy early mornings but not interested in changing camps every second day. It also works beautifully before the Kenyan coast or Zanzibar.
It is not the right route for someone determined to collect as many parks as possible, or for a traveller who will consider the safari unsuccessful without a river crossing. Five nights work because we deliberately leave things out.

- Route
Nairobi · Lake Nakuru · Maasai Mara · Nairobi
- Length
6 days / 5 nights.
Two nights Lake Nakuru and three nights Maasai Mara. For international arrivals, we often add a Nairobi night before the safari rather than counting jet lag as day one.
- Best months
July–September for the strongest chance of seeing the Great Migration in the Mara; January–February for a quieter dry-season safari. June and October–December are excellent alternatives depending on priorities.
- Which camps
The Cliff at Lake Nakuru for its position above the lake and intimate ten-suite scale.
Angama Mara for the Oloololo Escarpment setting, direct access into the Mara Triangle and the freedom to structure game-drive days around what is actually happening.
Alternatives are chosen according to traveller profile, season and budget rather than treating either property as mandatory.
- Included
Accommodation and specified meals, private road transfers, safari guiding and game drives, relevant park fees and confirmed bush-air arrangements. Exact inclusions are detailed in each itinerary.
- Rates
Upon request. Safari pricing changes substantially by season, camp and aircraft arrangements — particularly during the Migration — so we price the complete route rather than quoting a headline nightly rate.
The luxury is not seeing more. It is having time to watch.

We will decide what deserves the six days — and leave the rest out.
