Seven Days in the Loire, and Not a Coach in Sight
Châteaux, gardens, a market kitchen and a bicycle. The week we build for travellers who think they have already done France.

The Loire is easy to turn into a checklist: another château, another staircase, another photograph taken before everyone gets back into the car.
We prefer to let the places feel different. A market morning in Tours. Formal gardens at Villandry. Leonardo’s final home in Amboise. Chenonceau over the Cher. A bicycle instead of a car at Chambord.
This is seven days with six nights split between two bases — which means one hotel change, not a different suitcase every morning.
01 · Tours
A market and a kitchen
Arrive from Paris by private car and settle in for two nights. The second morning begins at Les Halles de Tours with a local chef, choosing seasonal produce, cheeses and breads before continuing to a private kitchen for a hands-on cooking class and lunch with Loire wines.
The afternoon is deliberately empty. After Paris and the journey south, there is no reason the first day in the Loire needs another monument.
Nights one and two
02 · Villandry, Azay and Chinon
Keep Tours as the base for one more night and head west.
Start with the gardens at Villandry, then continue to Azay-le-Rideau, reflected in the water of the Indre, and finish in Chinon, where the medieval fortress sits above the Vienne.

Night three
03 · Amboise to Chambord
Move east for the final three nights. One day belongs to Amboise and Clos Lucé, where Leonardo da Vinci lived from 1516 until his death in 1519, followed by Chenonceau stretching across the Cher.
Another takes in Cheverny and Chambord. Keep the final day lighter: a private cycling route through the château country, with a hot-air balloon at sunrise or late afternoon if the weather cooperates.
This is the part of the week where having time matters more than adding another château.
Nights four to sixWhat makes the week work
Chenonceau can require a timed entry during periods of high attendance; elsewhere we pre-arrange admissions and build the day around opening hours, geography and the quieter edges of the schedule.
The objective is not simply having tickets. It is arriving at the right time.
This is not a guided walk through a food market. You shop with the chef for what is in season, then take those ingredients into the kitchen and cook lunch together.
It is one of the days that gives the week something other than another château.
The Loire is easy to drive, but a château-heavy day is better when nobody is thinking about parking, directions or who is having wine at lunch.
For travellers who enjoy driving, we can mix private touring with days at their own pace rather than making either format mandatory.
Domaine de la Tortinière, Les Hauts de Loire, Fleur de Loire, Les Sources de Cheverny and Relais de Chambord are among the properties we consider depending on the route, room category and style of the trip.
The important choice is not simply the hotel. It is where you wake up relative to what you are doing that day.
Who it suits
Couples who have already done Paris and want to see the country behind it. Families with older children or teenagers, where cooking, cycling and the possibility of a balloon flight break up the château visits beautifully.
And anyone who cares about gardens. Villandry alone changes the rhythm of the week.
When to go
May and September are our favourite months: beautiful gardens, milder weather and fewer summer crowds. April through October works well overall; September also brings the deer rut around Chambord.
How it changes
The most common variation is to put Paris first: three nights in the city, then the same six-night Loire journey.
The other is Champagne afterwards. It changes the finish completely — châteaux and gardens giving way to vineyards, cellars and long lunches — and turns the trip into a particularly good ten-day version of France.
